Confusion about diploma – transcript translation evaluation
Universities, colleges, licensing boards, and U.S. employers ask international students, academicians, and professionals from other countries to prove and document their academic and educational credentials. Many immigrants get confused with the requirements for certified translation. They frequently ask us if their diploma, transcripts, degrees, and educational/professional certificates will be converted into educational units used in the United States. Many countries use 100 or 10 for grades or grade point average (GPA) in evaluating educational success in their evaluation systems.
Certified translation of your educational/academic documents does not mean evaluation
Evaluation of your academic documents (diplomas, transcripts, degrees, and educational certificates) is either made by:
- universities, colleges, or educational institutions; or
- foreign credential evaluation agencies (evaluation agencies, in short).
Many large universities and colleges have their own staff knowledgeable about the grading systems in other countries. So, all they need a “certified translation” so that evaluation is made easier. If you are from a country where American system of grading is standard, then you have no problem. You simply need certified translation by a professional translation agency. Furthermore, if you are from a country where grading is not in line with American grading system but your particular university, college, or educational institution uses American grading system due to their academic orientation, then you have no problem. However, if you have your diploma, transcript, degree, or academic certificate with grades, credit units, and general point averages in non-U.S. (European) evaluation system, then you need “evaluation” of your grades and degree after they are translated and certified.
When do you need evaluation of your academic or educational documents?
You need evaluation of your educational document, especially transcripts when:
- the university, college or educational institution to whom you apply does not have staff to evaluate your academic credential and asks you to have your documents translated, certified and evaluated.
- state licensing agencies do not employ evaluation staff and want your certified translation evaluated in order to grant you professional license in accounting (Certified Public Accountant), nursing, medicine, and similar other professional fields.
You need “certified translation” of your diplomas, transcripts, degrees, and educational certificates in all cases
If you intend to continue your education, get professional license, or employment in the United States you must have certified translation of your academic papers whether or not your documents need evaluation. In short, you need to have their certified translation under all circumstances.
The, what is certified translation?
“Translation” is “word-for-word” conversion of your educational documents from your native language (Spanish, German, French, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, etc.) into English language, as-is, without adding, deleting, modifying, or interpreting their titles and contents.
“Certified” translation is certification of your translated documents on corporate letterhead, with authorized signature and raised (embossed) corporate seal and a Certification by Translator statement as required by these universities, colleges, educational institutions, licensing boards, and American employers.
