Three students have achieved professional recognition as the best young orchestral string talents in the UK after winning the finals of the Yamaha Music Foundation of Europe Scholarship Awards, held at the David Josefowitz Recital Hall of the Royal Academy of Music in London earlier this month.
The Yamaha scheme, now in its 21st year is highly prized by students and educationalists alike. This year’s awards attracted a record number of entries from students in full time music education from all over the UK with the finalists coming from the Royal Academy of Music, the Royal College of Music, the Royal Northern College of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
The three winners are Jiafeng Chen: violin (Royal College of Music), Mikhail Nemtsov: cello (Royal Northern College of Music) and Yoshika Masuda: cello (Royal Northern College of Music) each received £2,000 to put towards furthering their studies and careers.
Ten students representing some of the UK’s leading conservatoires were selected as finalists by a preliminary judging panel to each perform a programme of 30 minutes duration at the live final in front of a capacity audience, gaining valuable experience and feedback from a world class artist and tutor judging panel, including Nicholas Pendlebury (jury chair), the head of strings at Trinity College and Peter Esswood, head of strings at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, among other heads of departments.
The Yamaha Music Foundation of Europe is a charitable trust founded in 1990 with a remit to assist talented young musicians.
