Sink or Swim: The Politics of Bilingual Education
I recently did a paper investigating the different types of Bilingual and language Immersion Learning and found out the following: There are three major forms of Language Learning: Language Immersion, Transitional Bilingual Education, and Dual Language Immersion. The first drops you into the target language classroom and wishes you luck. There is no extra help or explanation, just a sink or swim attitude. With Transitional Bilingual Education, help is available in the natve language while the student transitions to the target language. The third option, DUal Luanguage Immersion, is an interesting one in it carries the same expense as the last, with extra teachers of other languages, but the student may ask questions in his native language but the answers will always be given in English. The other day I was approached by one of my 8th grade students who asked why we didn't have Bilingual Education in America when other countries do. I explained the expense involved in additional teachers, but agreed, we should! We are far behind the rest of the world.
